Packing and careful handling
Three ways to do it, and the middle one is what most people choose.
We can pack the whole house, pack the half nobody enjoys — kitchen, glass, pictures, the cabinet with all the awkward shapes in it — or simply drop materials off a week early so you can work through it at your own pace.
The materials matter more here than in a lot of places. Purpose-made cases for pictures and mirrors, because a gilt frame under a blanket in a stacked van is a frame with a corner missing. Tissue and bubble for glass and ceramics. Wardrobe cartons that keep hanging clothes on their hangers, which sounds like a luxury until you have tried to iron a household.
If you are packing yourself, two things: fill boxes to the top so they do not crush, and keep them liftable. Half-full boxes collapse under the ones above them and overloaded ones split, and both of those happen in the van rather than in your hallway.
